I don't do it either. I'd be washing my hands again... (OCD). I don't even like touching the meat. I slice open the package, flip it and hope it lands in the pan.
Janet, Do you wash the knife you slice open the pkg with? Because, ew, sometimes someone in this house who isn't me puts the knife back. Ew. I don't like touching the meat either. And don't get me started on if the meat juice leaks out of the pkg. Onto anywhere. *shudder*
Carla, sorry to be carrying on here. I'm just curious.
I mix meatloaf with a wooden spoon. I can roll meatballs, but rinse all the time in between. Now that I type that, it is kind of inconsistent of me. I'll roll the meat but not squish it between my fingers. Hm.
I can touch raw chicken. But the juice of anything - I stand with *shudder*. (deeeeeegusting!)
Yes, I have to wash the knife that I cut the package with.
Do you do this? When I brown ground beef ....I move it around in the pan with a spoon to break it up while it's cooking and about three-quarters of the way through the cooking process, I'll switch to a new spoon to finish with so the red juice's bacteria on the old spoon doesn't spread to my almost-cooked meat. How bad is that??
I wouldn't use a wooden spoon for raw meat because it is absorbent. (Right?)
Raw eggs for omelets - I rinse the bowl that I beat the eggs in as soon as I'm done with it and pour the liquid right down the drain. I hate having raw egg touch my sink. (I could disinfect every day I guess, but who does that?) OK, you can commit me to the institution now. :)
Janet, I don't switch spoons, but I'm with you on pouring the juice down the drain so it doesn't spread on the sink.
Where did I get the wooden spoon thing from? (Probably the same guy who doesn't wash the package cutting knife.) So what do you mix your meat loaf with?
I know this is getting a bit silly, (sorry to all you normal people) but since you asked...
They (whoever "they" is) say that wood cutting boards absorb meat juices so I assume a wood spoon can too. (Maybe it isn't touching the meat long enough to allow it to absorb anything, I don't know.) I use a plastic version of the wood spoon, but I saw on TV today that the Barefoot Contessa uses a fork for mixing meatloaf so it's "lighter". I may have to switch. :)
Speaking of wooden spoons, they were a discipline tool at my house when I was a child. (For the boys, not girls, of course.) MANY were broken. Doesn't that sound ghastly in this day and age?

I love doing that and also do it all the time. You are not alone my friend.
Here's some more OCD for you.
Do you wash your hand after? You know, e-coli and whatnot.
Actually, I think it's kind of funny that you guys do that. Something I never thought to do.
I don't do it either...if I did, I would have to wash my hands. : )

Happy cooking!

I'll "meat" you later at the OCD Center.
Karla with a K,
"OCD Center" - LOL.

My Mom broke a hairbrush or 2 in our day. And we didn't have any boys. I don't recall it being my butt though.
Yea, I was thinking plastic. But I don't think I have one as sturdy as a wooden spoon. We'll see.
oh yea, about the normal people...
Normal is just a setting on the dryer in my house.
