How About Watching The Grinch?
Joshua doesn't like horror movies. Like me, he doesn't think that being scared is fun. He had a permission slip for me to sign. Or not sign. His World Studies class would be watching The Mummy for "fun" before Christmas break. That is exactly what the permission slip said! He doesn't want to watch it. I asked him if he was ok with being the only 7th grader NOT watching the thing. The boy is fine with that and so is his mother. The teacher doesn't quite know what to do with him yet. While he is content to sit in the library and read she has offered to fast forward through all of the fun.

Yea. . . watching The Mummy is a much more productive use of his time than say, Math, or Science, or Language Arts, or Music, or Art or any of those other book-learnin type activities.
Sad.
Um, there are so many things wrong with this, I don't know where to begin.
Primarily, I guess, is the idea that a teacher is using "The Mummy" (which, for the record, I enjoy very much, even though it's cheesy) for an electronic babysitter. Unless Josh's class is studying archaeology, or movie making, there isn't any reason to show this movie in school. If you're going to show a movie to your class before Christmas (not "Holiday") break, it ought to be something a little more appropriate for linking with some sort of educational theme. Maybe that's just me.
Oh, and I wonder at an administration that will allow this.
Sorry - didn't mean to soapbox, but this kind of thing irks me. What a waste of time and taxpayer money.
It's for World Studies. As though that makes it better.
