Not Funny
The next plague of plagues? They are everywhere in this house. If you know what they are please comment. Please don't say termite, please don't say termite.
While these guys look pretty ominous, they only use those pincers for other bugs. And contrary to their name, they probably won't move into anyone's ears. They like close quarters, and damp things, like a pile of towels from the pool. Damp laundry, bathroom sinks and shower curtains. Squish 'em and flush. They'll go away soon. It's just the season for these guys. I'm from the west, Idaho, Washington, and also spent time in Kansas, we had them in each of those states. I'm surprized you have not seen them before.
Oh, Carla. You have no idea what a relief this post and comments are to me. It's almost 4am and I have been lying awake fretting about these DILL PICKLE bugs for FIVE HOURS. (Not counting the sleep lost to them last night and the night before.) Where you said, "Please don't say termite," I was saying, "Please don't say cockroach." I have run the gambit of berating my housecleaning skills, wondering if we have termites, wondering if they are harmful, wondering if they are on me ALL. OF. THE. TIME. Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this because I was NOT brave enough to do the same thing, though I have considered it for days. I know I sound a little crazy, but this is just the tip of the iceburg of the CRAZY I've borne from these "Earwigs," (if that's even their real name...). Close quarters? Yes. Damp? YES. THANK YOU. I can sleep now. Maybe.
Also, MaryLu, I, too, (FOUR COMMAS already) have lived all over the country and have seen some pretty ugly critters, but have never seen these. They're not as gross as centipedes (*spits*), but the sheer quantity is driving me mad. Has driven me mad.
I can't stop. This post is literally an answer to prayer.
Carla, Are they gone? We have them here from time to time. They like to hide under flower pots and under organic mulches and yard waste (like grass and weed piles) and they like to eat certain flowers like marigolds. Check for dampness in floors and walls in the house and make sure rain down spouts are directed away from your house. Good luck!

We see them around. It has rained for much of the day today so maybe they all moved in. It is not a total invasion though. Fun. My kids love saying the word earwig btw
Shannon O.B. had mentioned weird-looking bugs with "pinchers" on their behinds, so when this came up I asked her and she told me this was what she'd found in her DAMP LAUNDRY! Ok, first, EWW! Second, EW!

Euborellia annulipes, commonly known as the earwig. Harmless.

Must be because of so much rain. My house has lot of bugs too. Sick.
Thanks Jeff.
Earwig? Now that's funny. Thank you, Jeff!!

Oh, so THAT'S what Shannon's been talking about!
Mary Lu,
I was expecting our usual plague of black ants. Earwigs it is then. :)
Kelli,
Does Shannon O Bannon read Fourby40 or get the gist from Sarah?

So thankful right now.
You are so very welcome my sweet Erin friend! Someone out there in the blogosphere knows something about what makes us fret.
Get some sleep. :)

We get earwigs around here all of the time! They are harmless...usually are in the bathroom.
