Are You Smarter

than a 4h grader? Here is your math question.

Rosa has 15 quarters and 10 nickels. She buys juice from a vending machine for herself and her friends. The juice costs 35 cents a can. Rosa is wearing a red sweater. She puts 2/3 of the quarters and 3/5 of the nickles in the machine and gets no change back.

How many cans of juice did she buy? ________cans

Show your work. Eyes on your own blog comment. No talking.

I added the red sweater because that is how I think, I have been told.

15 x 2/3 = 10 quarters
10 x $.25 = $2.50

10 x 3/5 = 6 nickels
6 x $.05 = $.30

$2.50 + $.30 = $2.80

$2.80/$.35 per can = 8 cans

Break time.

No kidding--Janet is amazing.
These kinds of things make me hope Richard doesn't die leaving me alone for homework duty. Is that weird?

This was just one of Sarah's math problems for weekend homework. I like red.

Carla,
Fourth graders have it pretty tough. I remember having tests on addition and subtraction! Thanks for grading me so fast. I've been really nervous (about my grade). Phew! How did Sarah do?

erin,
I know how you feel. My eight grader is doing geometry already. I thank God for my hubby's math mind.

kristi noser,
Gee, thanks, but really, that's about all the math I remember.

Oops, correction - "eighth".
