Maybe a Karate Chop?
This is the glassware that fits into our microwave. Um. Still haven't the slightest idea how it broke in half while Joshua was babysitting. Something about popcorn, popcorn butter, BAM! and well, there you have it.

oooh, bummer. Or, I guess that was BAMmer.
(I know sometimes word ver jokes are lame... but I bet you wish they could"reduo" that one.)
My husband popped some microwave popcorn on an inverted plasic kids' plate once and it cracked in half just like that. I wouldn't have expected an actual microwave plate to do it, though!
Carla - check the edges of the plate. Our microwave plate is also cracking in half - someone hit it with the side with a bowl, causing a tiny chip. It's been cracking in half since. (There's a couple of inches left.)
It seems any moisture that seeps into the crack will, when the microwave turns on, heat up and work like a steam piston.

Chris,
That sounds dangerous! I think you can buy replacement plates at hardware stores or maybe walmart. Good luck!
I'd better go check my plate for cracks....
Let's call it a science experiment then.
