Open Flame

I knew I should have done what I told myself to do. I have been meaning to change the tinfoil on the bottom of the stove. It had 3 inches of grease on it. Which caught fire the other night. Just a small fire that I thought I could contain. With flour. That made it flameier. I told Sarah to tell Dad to come upstairs cause there was a fire! She did! He did! With water and oven mitted hands the tinfoil was removed and extinguished. My hero!! The smoke alarms went off soon after that. Suppers Ready!!

Change the tinfoil. Check.

You must have forgot, the water made things worse. I should have known better.

Our firefighting tactics in order of use.
Flour
Water
Oven mitted hands

I probably could have whipped up a quick dough with the flour and water and smothered the thing.

What is it with the Streams and appliances???

Ok I don't usually do this, but my word verification is--I kid you not--acifire.

Hmmm. Have you check the filter on your dryer lately? Another easily forgotten potential fire. But, thank goodness for husband's as our "fixer of all things" including fires!

For future reference, you can wet a kitchen towel and place it over the burner/frying pan/whatever. It will smother the flames. Be careful using flour because (believe it or not) flour dust can be explosive.

nebraska girl,
Can you place a wet towel on the heating coil of an oven with a fire next to the coil? Let's experiment!!

Flour dust can be explosive. Now that is a good thing to know!! Thank you.

I misread you Carla. I was thinking the tinfoil was in the drip pans under the burner on the stove top. That's where I usually have flame ups. The oven is a different monster, but I suppose if you turned the oven off (like you're supposed to do with the stove top burner) the result would probably be about the same. I was told that instead of flour you should use salt. I'm not claiming to be an expert, but the safety officer where I work takes his job very seriously and is always sending home/work safety tips and videos to us.

No worries, nebraska girl. Thank you for trying to save our lives!! :)

I should give up cooking, methinks.
