Giving

Took the bigs to the Thrifty Store yesterday. Found an awesome coat for The Momma for $9.99! An elderly woman stood in line with a cart overflowing with Cabbage Patch Dolls. We got to chatting as I assumed she was handing them out for Christmas. No. She cleans them and dresses them and puts them on shelves in her house. She told me she has shelf after shelf and room after room of the dolls. I said to her, "You can't take em with you." She said, "Oh yeah I know that, but what else is an old woman like me supposed to do?" I watched her unroll a bunch a bills and pay for the dolls that she collects that collect dust. I had this overwhelming sadness after that conversation. Hmmmm..what else can an older woman do?

1. Sponsor children through Compassion International. www.compassion.com
2. Be a mentor to a scared, pregnant teenage girl.
3. Volunteer at a hospital to hold premature infants.
4. Volunteer to deliver food to needy families.
5. Share your stories at an elderly care center.
6. Give your dolls away to children that have never had one.
7. Go tell it on the mountain.

When Patrick's grandmother passed away there was a card table with some trinkets on it that people could take. Someone came up to me and said,"Sad isn't it? This is all that's left of her life."
I disagreed. I thought it was perfect.

I want to give and live and love so much that I have a card table(or less)of things and a lifetime of memories that I left. I want to be remembered for love. I pray that I am all used up and given away.

Good post, Carla. We just attended my sweet Grandma's funeral yesterday. She loved Jesus and it was beautiful to celebrate her life. My heart aches, though...

I feel the same way as you Carla. I am not a person who likes holding on to things. I know lots of people who like to hold on to antiques, have many "trinkets" and I have never been able to figure out why. I would much rather give to others than to collect the things of this earth. Thanks for another thoughtful entry!

When I started reading your post I was hoping you were going to say that in fact the lady DOES give to little girls that need the "new" dollies.

She doesn't know what she's missing. That's too bad. That's cool that you could say something to her. Maybe your comment will prompt her to re-think her hobby's outcome?
