Honestly

I keep hearing a certain phrase over and over lately. It goes something like this-

Enjoy your children now, because it goes so fast.

Hhhhmmmm. I have to wonder-is that to encourage? An observation from empty nesters? Is it along the lines of the "just you wait" statements that I despise so much? Yes, it is true. Life is short. But when you are waiting for a belt for your vacuum, another lamp breaks, you find a booger on the wall and you are up to your elbows in poo, I don't think that fast is quite fast enough.

Just because life is short that doesn't mean you have to enjoy milk leaking through the front of your shirt, muddy shoes tracking across the carpet, gum in hair, or spilled milk-juice-cereal-ketchup-everything. Enjoy the good things and relax enough to not get too bent out of shape about the frustrating things. And when you see them walk down the aisle you will just be immensely happy and feel blessed to see how God has worked in all of your lives. So, don't worry, no matter what anyone says, some parts of childhood don't go by fast enough!

Ok, I said it. But you have to keep in mind some of the things that did not go by fast enough for me.
Body casts x2 and the up-the-back-poopers that came with THAT!
A three-year-old who would hit anyone and anything with a stick--the dog was the favorite.
Children who swore they flossed their teeth, and after repeated opportunities to "come clean" were told that the floss ran out two days ago--and the creative punishment that followed.
Two step children at 19, and no idea how to parent.
So, I've been there, and I know the things you'd just as soon do without, but you look back and think, "Man that went fast!"--the stuff you haven't blocked out, that is.

I'm looking forward to the part when I look back and think, remember when...? At that point I'll get to remember, still be happy and enjoy all the cute and sweet stuff, but all the other not-so-cute stuff will be over. It's almost the best of both worlds... almost.

As a non-mom, I know my opinion doesn't hold much weight, but all you have to do is peruse your blog to find that you are actually very good at enjoying the important things and laughing about the frustrating things. Remember the post about sign language? I still think about that one.

How quickly I forget. Thank you Erin for reminding me. :)
