Twins
We had twins and I didn't even know I was expecting. Twin squirrels that is. The babies fell out of their nest today. My children acted the part of concerned parents. Never leaving their sides, trying to get them to drink water, swatting the flies off, keeping them in the shade, yelling at Mom. I was clueless. Hey, I have breast milk! I didn't think Timothy would take too kindly to the idea of me playing wet nurse to varmints. I called everyone I could think of and God bless my husband for running to some Roseville sanctuary only to find they don't take "out of state" squirrels. He is now in Osceola leaving them in much more capable hands. Goodbye and good luck, Twitchy and Itchy. We love you!

Carla,
My mom shoots squirrels off her deck. They mess with her bird feeders ao she deals with them the way folks in them parts deal with varmints. Levi was going off the deck one day and he yelled in, "Gramma, I'm going out to play. Don't shoot me. I'm not a squirtle."
I know. There are many out there that will look at dying baby squirrels and have no qualms about giving them a shovel to the head.
BUT..I had 6 children looking at me to HELP. They will never forget that we took the time to care.
I wouldn't have put a shovel to their heads. I just would have found a really high bridge from which to throw them. Or I would have gone musky fishing with them.
(And everyone says, "Awww...that wasn't necessary!")
"Where's Eddy? he usually eats the *@ things"...
(I'm sorry I couldn't resist)
Wow! All you guys are focusing too much on the baby squirels and the nasty things you would have done. You missed the point that children were involved and watching intently waiting to see how mom and dad would respond.
Teach the kids to rule over animals. That is what shovels and bridges are made for. My kids still talk of the time they saw me take a shovel to a snake. Maybe that is what they mean by "scared for life."
Maybe your actions were better.
Ruling over creation verses modeling stewardship of creation seems to be the balancing act we're all refering to.
The trump card, it appears, is how we all feel about the helpless and defenseless and seemingly useless parts of the creation, and again, especially when our children are watching closely.
Thank you Pat! I can't tell you the number of baby animals we have nursed over the years. Hairless eyes-closed mice no longer than an inch, little rabbits found under the deck, all kinds of things. Now, I probably would have just let them die and go on my way, but the children were watching! So we fed them and tried to make a go of it. Somed live, some not, but you gotta try.
