Dinner Prep

I like to have my children help around the house. Yes, it takes almost twice as much work at times but I refuse to let them leave this nest without knowing how to make a meal, do laundry or clean a bathroom! I asked Sarah to wash the potatoes for supper and she hopped to work. Did I say water only? I can't remember. After putting Timothy down for a nap and cleaning Nathan up from lunch I saw a mound of bubbles with Sarah happily dunking potatoes over and over. I told her that we use plain water to wash potatoes. She said, "But I wanted to let them splash around for a bit and besides my hands were dirty."

I don't mean to be a discouragement to you but....don't you hate it when people do that--"I don't mean to but I'm gonna do it anyway". Oh well. About preparing them to cook and clean and fend for themselves. Just because they learn it doesn't mean they'll do it. Take my two oldest children, for example. Same upbringing, different results. As children, my oldest (to protect the innocent I'll just call him "Joe") was neat, clean, and helpful. By the age of twelve Joe could do the laundry for a family of nine (even got stains out), kept his room the cleanest in the house, kept his drawers in perfect order, and for my birthday gave me the gift of a full week of cooking supper. And he did it! Joe's younger brother (to protect his innocence I'll just call him "Junior") was messy, made one cake in his career as a child, and spent the majority of his days fishing and throwing balls.

Today, "Joe" lives off of frozen pizza, cereal, his sister's frozen love offerings, cereal, the benevolence of others, and cereal. I'm not sure how his apartment looks but his dorm room was not navigable. "Junior" loves to cook, he thinks it's fun! He bought me a new spice rack for my birthday so I could put more flavor in MY cooking. He lives in a house with 5 other guys and although he's the youngest he's called the "house father". Junior's organized a cleaning system for paying bills, cleaning the bathroom, doing the cooking, and washing dishes. Before long breaks he cleans and empties the refrigerator and turns down the hot water heater.

What did I do right/wrong? I think they just try to confuse us. But now, what do I do with the rest of them?

You are right. I will TEACH, they will
LEARN and whatever they do when they move out...they will do. sigh
I love your wisdom. More than that, Keithslady. I need your wisdom. Thank you!

The jig is up, Joey. And in the wise words of Jimmy Neutron's mom, "pick up your pants!"

So, Joeysmom, it's not that he CAN'T, but it's that he WON'T, is that it? Interesting.

If you worked from 8 AM to 10 PM every day, 6 days a week (it's Friday, 10:30, and I'm still at work...and yes, I'm working, just took a quick break to check the blogs...), you wouldn't feel like doing much cooking or cleaning when you were done either.

As for the condition of my dorm in college, it was never bad. Let's see, my last semester I led a Bible study, was the chair of the College Republicans, and worked 5 jobs. the year before that I held two jobs totaling over 50 hours a week. Never mind the full time classes the whole time.

But now I sound like I'm whining, when there's really nothing to whine about. Mom's right. Things I used to care about I don't care as much about. It's tough to care when you're the only one to care. I can count on one hand the number of people who have even been in my apartment. Okay, I need two - I forgot that my family stopped by when I first moved in. But when there's no one else to care, it gets hard for me to care.

And there's always more work to do with this job....

But seriously, thanks for everything Mom! Not your fault that I'm not currently using it all. Don't worry, once this job is done, I will.

I believe you. The truth is, you're still the one I count on to pull through for me when you're home and things aren't getting done. Every time the gunk accumulates between the leaves in the table of think of you, home on break, 'degunking' it.

oops, "I think of you" not of.

:)

That makes me smile. After 20 hours in the office yesterday and a whole day on the road at a parade today, a smile is exactly what I needed right now.

Thanks Mom.

Oh yeah for sure!! nobody comes to my house either, I usually go to my friends houses, cause they all have kids. I was just happy to have our study here once and even then it was just me and Margie, but it was company!! Plus since I'm hardly home there's no one here to cook for and keep up on the cleaning, except for my cat but he doesn't care, he's the one who makes the most mess anyways... I'd like to think all my cooking, cleaning, & house skills are on hold for now...
